Route from Iraklion airport to Gerani highway exit

You leave the airport range (1) towards South and the highway. Before the highway bridge, turn right and take the highway to Rethymnon (2) (the sign points to "Iraklion").
A bare hour later you will arrive to the Cape of Scaleta. The highway cuts through the cape's summit in a leftward bend, and the rocks on both sides form a gate (3).
Immediately afterwards opens on the right hand side the view down to the bay of Rethymnon with it's hotel suburbs and the 15 kms distant city with it's port and the fortress (4).

After some kilometers, the highway becomes four-laned and ascends steeply, in order to bypass the city of Rethymnon. From several viaducts you can see the town center, the fortress and the port down on the right hand side.
The highway then descends and underpasses the Old National Road through a short tunnel (5). Please memorise your car's current mileage.
1.9 kms after the tunnel there is a BP gas station on the right hand side (6). Then follows a right-hand bend.

The highway ascends for some meters and then enters a passage between the rocks, descending in a left-hand bend. As soon as the passage opens there is 3.6 kms after the tunnel on the right hand side the highway exit to Gerani (7), just before a right-hand bend. Here you leave the highway and underpass it to the left.

Route from Hania airport to Gerani highway exit
You leave the airport range (1), pass the gas station and after approx. 300 meters turn left. After another 1,700 meters turn right and on the road to Hania pass the villages of Aroni (2) and Pithari (3).
By the exit of Pithari, the road ascends and then forks. Here you leave the road to Hania and take the left branch to Souda and Rethymnon.
After a short way the view opens down to the bay. The road winds down the slope and finally arrives few meters above sea level.
You enter Souda and continue to the traffic lights (4). Here you first turn right, and after a short distance turn left to enter the wide road to the highway.
After crossing under the highway, turn left (5) and enter the highway in the direction of Rethymnon. The highway then changes into a two-lane motorway.

The highway section between Georgioupolis (6) and the bridge over the Petres river (7) is rather flat and straight. Then there are some bends and hills, and afterwards a wide left-hand bend around a bay.
The highway then ascends dead straight and on the top of that hill turns right (8). It descends rightwards, and just there in the corner is the exit to Gerani.

Route from Gerani highway exit to the villas
As soon as you are at the entrance to the country road to Gerani, please reset the trip counter.
After you have set the trip counter to zero, do not touch it anymore! Just watch it!
All data on distances and kilometers hereafter refer to this place as the zero point.

When coming to Gerani for the very first time it is better to drive round the village than to cross it.
Immediately behind a right-hand bend, turn left at 0.5 kms from the zero point towards "Fratz. Metohia". At 0.9 kms from the zero point turn left towards "Fratz. Metohia" another time, and at 1.2 kms from the zero point for the third time.
The road winds through wild gardens and olive groves, and mainly in springtime there is a profusion of blossom of all colours. But watch out: There are some potholes as well.
At 1.8 kms from the zero point turn RIGHT towards "Fratz. Metohia", and at 2.4 kms from the zero point again right - but this time NOT towards "Fratz. Metohia"!
At 2.7 kms from the zero point you will arrive to a T-junction above the village. Left hand by the corner there is a telephone cabin. Please memorise this one: I will be important for the way back (unless you plan to cross the village).
Please turn left at the telephone cabin and continue around some bends. The road then winds up a hill.
At 3.5 kms from the zero point branch off leftwards, just before the top of the hill. The path continues on gravel immediately left-hand again and then in front of the house (there is only one) right-hand. At 3.8 kms from the zero point you will find yourself in front of the Gerani Villas' gate.

Crossing Gerani: As the streets of Gerani are very narrow there is a one-way regulation.
When coming from below, one has to cross the tiny main square in the middle of the village, to sidle through the chairs in front of the baker's and the kafenion, and carefully continue between the houses. As soon as there are no houses on the right hand side anymore, you will find the village's upper telephone cabin by the left hand corner.
When coming from above (and NOT turning right by the upper telephone cabin) one has to follow the one-way directions. Who then believes that he finally arrived to the baker's rear yard is lucky: It is the main road.
